Children and their families are invited to create a race car and compete in the Lake County YMCA Pinewood Derby on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 pm at the Central Y, 933 Mentor Ave in Painesville.
Register children by Feb. 12 for ample time to build a new race car (with help from their parents). Race car and participation guidelines are available for download here.
Derby guidelines state cars made from previous derby’s or Boy Scout kits are not allowed to compete. Car class will be 5-ounce, kits must be purchased at the Lake County Central Y. Cars will be collected at time of weigh-in and will not be able to be tweaked prior to racing.
The Pinewood Derby competition will begin at 5:30 pm with racing, dinner and awards for top finishers. Families are invited to stay for open swim from 7:00-9:00 pm.
“Last year’s Family Pinewood Derby was a huge success,” said Elisa Hennies, Youth Development Director at the Lake County Central Y. “It’s fun and challenging for kids to learn the dynamics of building a race car. It’s also a great way for families to build stronger relationships by helping each other in the car building process and by supporting each other at the starting line.”
Registration is recommended by February 12 to ensure ample time to create a race car. 5-ounce car kits are sold at the Central Y Front Desk. Y Member car kits are $10 each; Program Member car kits are $15 each. Guest spectator tickets are $3 each.
