Children and their families are invited to create a racecar and compete in the Lake County YMCA Pinewood Derby on Saturday, February 21 at 5:30 pm at the Central Y, 933 Mentor Ave in Painesville.
Children may build a new racecar (with help from their parents) and compete on February 21. Racecar and participation guidelines are available for download at www.lakecountyymca.org.
Derby guidelines state that cars made for previous derbies or Boy Scout kits are not allowed to compete. Car class will be 5-ounce and kits may be purchased at the Lake County Central Y. Cars will be collected at the time of weigh-in and will not be able to be tweaked prior to racing.
The Pinewood Derby competition will begin at 5:30 pm with racing, awards for top finishers and dinner. Families are invited to stay for open swim from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
“We are very excited to host the Family Pinewood Derby,” said Elisa Hennies, Youth Development Director at the Lake County Central Y. “It’s fun and challenging for kids to learn the dynamics of building a racecar. It’s also a great way for families to build stronger relationships by helping each other in the car-building process and by supporting each other at the starting line.”
Registration is recommended by February 7 to ensure ample time to create your car. 5-ounce car kits are sold at the Central Y Front Desk. Y Member car kits are $10 each; Program Member car kits are $15 each. Guest spectator tickets are $3 each.
