October is prime time for apples, whether you enjoy them fresh from the tree, baked in a pie, or scented with spices in a warm cup of cider. If you’re looking for local orchards to indulge your tastes for all things apple, here are a few places to check out.

West Orchards is located on State Route 20, roughly a mile and a half after it splits from State Route 2. The West family has been farming in Perry since 1891, and the farm is now run by the fifth generation. Earlier in the season, West Orchards was the place to pick your own strawberries or sour cherries. Summer sun saw the ripening of West Orchards peaches, plums, and nectarines. Now, crisp autumn weather means the apples are ready, so stop by soon.

In addition to Melrose, Cortland, and other varieties of apples, West Orchards also sells a variety of local products. They feature Fowlers Mill baking mixes, Harlow’s popcorn, BittnerBees and Mark’s Apiary local honey, and more. West Orchards is open on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. You’ll find them at 3034 N. Ridge Road (SR 20) in Perry. Call 440-259-3192 for more information, as hours can vary due to crop availability.

You’ll find Westwind Farm, a fruit farm in Madison, roughly a half-mile south of Interstate 90 on State Route 528 off exit 212. They offer a variety of seasonal fruits throughout the seasons, including you-pick blueberries in the summer, you-pick apples and ready picked grapes in the fall. Westwind Farm is located at 4600 South Madison Road in Madison. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. They are closed on Monday. To find out what varieties are available now, call 440-428-0192 or email westwindfarm44057@gmail.com.

The Apple Patch is located 662 Rural Drive in Eastlake, and is easily accessible from both Lakeshore Boulevard and State Route 2. This pick-your-own orchard feature over 20 varieties of apples, including favorites like McIntosh, Red and Gold Delicious, and Northern Spy.

Because The Apple Patch is a small family-owned and operated business, the hours of operation are limited to Monday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. until dusk and on weekends from 10 a.m. until dusk. Call 440-946-1908 for more information.

As always, make sure to call an orchard first to check hours of operation and available apple varieties before hitting the road. Once you’ve made your plans, head out on your own fun fall adventure!
