If you’re stuck in a rut, and looking for something out-of-the-ordinary, you don’t need to travel very far to try something new and different. If you’re interested in anime or gaming, or are curious about this quirky subculture, you’ll want to attend NyanCon at Lakeland Community College this weekend. This one-day event, on Oct. 3 from 12:30 to 11 p.m., is free and open to the public. It provides a wonderful venue for fans of anime, gaming, comic books, science fiction, and fantasy to revel in a fun, welcoming atmosphere.

Don’t miss the cosplay contest, where you’ll see participants transform themselves into their favorite characters, or you can join in the fun with a costume of your own. NyanCon will also feature a full gaming area, including dance, band, video, board, tabletop and card games and tournaments. In addition, the event will offer panel discussions on a variety of related topics.  If you’re looking for a souvenir, there will be vendors and artists selling their wares.

The event is open to children. At the children’s area, coloring pages are available for kids age seven and under. The event schedule is conveniently color-coded so that parents can ascertain the most appropriate events for their family. Please note that ratings are not enforced by NyanCon staff; parents are responsible for making sure chosen events are age-appropriate for their children. NyanCon will take place at Lakeland Community College (7700 Clocktower Drive) in Kirtland.

If anime isn’t your thing, why not try a dance party at the Steele Mansion in Painesville? The mansion was built in 1867 for George Steele, and was described at the time as the “grandest home in Painesville.” Built in the French second empire style, the Steele Mansion has come back to life as a historic inn and event venue.

On October 10 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm, the first floor will be transformed into a zombie-inspired setting for a special Thriller dance class and party. Come and learn the bone-chilling choreography to Michael Jackson’s epic hit. Dress in costume for this fun, freaky dance workshop. $40 per person, pre-registration is required. Make plans for a thrilling evening; snacks will be provided, and children are welcome. The Steele Mansion is located in Painesville (348 Mentor Avenue). Click here for more information.
