October is the time for goblins and witches and things that go bump in the night. While anyone can visit a manufactured scream site to have their pants scared off, some folks like to spend their time searching for real-life ghosts by touring a number of local ‘haunts.’
On the Willoughby Ghost Walk, you’ll take a twilight stroll through the haunted historic district of a city that’ boasts more than its share of ghost tales and legends. Your guide will lead you down darkened pathways to explore stories of grave robbers, ghostly apparitions, and mayhem. Discover why Willoughby is a town rich in both history and in spirits. The Ghost Walk tours operate on Fridays and Saturdays in October beginning at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., beginning at the Masonic Temple Building at 36 Public Square. For more information, call 440-710-4140.
Do ghosts and spirits really haunt the former Lake County Poorhouse? If you’re brave enough to take a walk through the long dark corridors with nothing but a candle to illuminate the way, then you just may find the answer. During a Lantern Tour at Lake County History Center, you’ll have the opportunity to escape into the past as your guide leads you on an eerie adventure.
During the tour, you’ll visit locations around the History Center where ghostly figures have said to have been sighted. You’ll experience areas where many have reported hearing heard creepy noises, or felt unseen hands touch them. You’ll hear stories of historically documented events that have taken place in these spaces, which will include the infirmary and attic, and the cells where the Poorhouse’s residents were detained. You’ll be equipped with ghost hunting equipment, including EMF detectors and dowsing rods, while on your tour. The Lake County Historical Center is located at 415 Riverside Drive in Painesville. For the more seasoned paranormal enthusiast, the four-hour Haunted Cleveland Book Tour may be more to your liking. At Riverside Cemetery, one of our city’s oldest cemeteries, you’ll hear the chilling story of a ghost hitchhiker. You’ll have exclusive access to the underground tunnels that run under the city below the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.
You’ll visit Grays Armory, and hear the true stories of the ghosts who haunt the historic building. You will be able to try, first hand, to search for ghosts – if you’re brave enough to try. The tour is available on Oct. 16, 23, 29 and 30. It will depart from the Powerhouse located on the west bank of the Flats at 6 p.m. and will conclude at 10 p.m. To purchase a seat, click here; call 216-903-4892 for additional information.
