Spring Break Without Breaking the Bank

Spring break is here! If taking a quick trip to someplace warm isn’t in the cards this year, you can still have fun with your family without leaving town. There’s plenty of fun to be had, close to home, without spending a fortune – all you need is a positive outlook and a few good ideas:

Take a hike

Head out with your kids and your pooch for a visit your favorite park, or find a new favorite park at the Lake Metroparks page where you’ll also find fun activities like Fun Day Monday and a nature art show at the Nature Center, or the Dryland Dogsled Challenge at Lake Farm Park.

Enjoy a rainy day

April often means soggy days — why not weather a rainy day with a classic movie or TV series marathon? Or, enjoy reading a new adventure aloud together or listening to it on CD. Visit your local library branch and borrow them for free!

It’s craftastic

Find an age-appropriate craft online, or visit your favorite craft store for ideas. Whether you use foam sheets and feathers, or construction paper and glue sticks, you’ll be making family memories while you craft those masterpieces. For the crafting-challenged, keep it simple and pick up some new coloring books and a new box of crayons or markers. Remember, it’s ok to color outside the lines!

Build a fire

Why not go old school with a backyard bonfire and an evening of stargazing? If the weather doesn’t cooperate, just throw some logs in the fireplace, because nothing is as relaxing as watching the flames dance. Add some s’mores or hot cocoa, and you’ve got a sweet evening of fun.

Act like a tourist

Spring break is a great time to check out some of those local treasures you’ve always meant to see. Spend time searching for spring in one of the many gardens at the Holden Arboretum, where you can explore by taking a tour, or hiking on your own. Or, check out the Indian Museum in Willoughby to see cool artifacts that have been discovered in Lake County from both prehistoric people and Native Americans.

No matter how you choose to spend spring break, spending time together will help create wonderful family memories. With a little creative thinking, you can have an awesome spring break at home without spending a ton of cash.
